Motorcyclists Flood Into Loveland for Thunder in the Rockies

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Thunder in the Rockies, Colorado’s largest bike rally. Organizers estimated that at least 40,000 bikers descended on the Loveland Harley-Davidson to check out vintage bikes, see stunt riders and commune with fellow motorcyclists.

A Fort Collins stunt team known as Suicidal Lifestyles performed awe-inspiring stunts on “crotch-rocket” motorcycles throughout the event. The team started out as a group of friends competing amongst themselves, but they have been performing publicly since 2007.

One of the most popular attractions for children and adults alike was the Wall of Death show. The act consists of a veteran stunt rider who performs while careening around a vertical wall that wraps into a circle.

The stunt rider still gets nervous, even though he has been performing for 15 years, because he knows the risks he is taking:

“Oh, it’s dangerous,” he remarked. “It’s not a matter of if I wipe out; it’s a matter of when. I hope when it happens, I take any injuries as best I can.”

Other attractions included a custom bike show, a Forever Family motorcycle ride that benefitted Realities for Children and musical performances from Bret Michaels.

Some came for the shows, but most came for the camaraderie. The brotherhood among motorcyclists is widely recognized, and most riders cannot pass up the chance to be at a rally with 40,000 other people who share their passion.
