The past few years have been pretty tough on motorcycle racing. Sponsors left the sport, television contracts weren’t renewed, and some domestic championships shrank or disappeared. Despite this slump, diehard racing fans didn’t give up, and it has paid off. Motorcycle road racing is back on television, motocross events are getting healthier, and we have a new national championship in MotoAmerica, but will this resurgence last?
We Need Motorcycle Coaches, And Here’s Why…
If you look at sports that are similar to motorcycling, you will find some outliers that have experienced constant growth over the last few years. Skiing, snowboarding, and cycling/peloton are good examples of these sports. But how are they getting more success, fans and participants? The answer is coaching.
A group of motorcycling legends and industry leaders have combined their forces to learn from these other sports. They are coming together to create the United States Motorcycle Coaching Association. The USMCA will be a nationwide network of trainers certified to teach riders and help motorcycling grow.
The organization’s first meeting was held right here in Colorado. The USA Cycling organization—in Colorado Springs—lent its headquarters to the cause in October. Now USMCA is planning an event in Arlington, Texas right before the Monster Energy AMA Supercross racing event. There they will discuss curriculums and other ideas to help expand the sport.
