The Speer Boulevard overpass in Denver is over 60 years old. The most recent safety rating of the bridge scored it at a 60.4 out of a possible 100. If a bridge scores less than a safety rating of 50, it is in need of extensive repairs or replacement to ensure its integrity. However, after an accident in which a semi truck clipped the bridge, the bridge’s safety rating will need to be reevaluated.
A tractor trailer traveling in the wrong lane on Interstate 25 scraped the bottom of the Speer Boulevard overpass on March 25 because the load it was hauling was too tall. As the semi hit, chunks of concrete and metal debris came down on top of four nearby cars, sending at least one woman who was severely hurt to the hospital to be treated for possible brain injuries.
Truck Driver Negligence
KUSA-TV reported that signs warning of the overpass’ varying height restrictions are posted all along I-25. The outer left lane, which is not intended for trucks, is only 13 feet while the inner lanes can clear tractor trailers as tall as 16 feet 8 inches. The semi involved in the truck accident had a height of 14 feet 4 inches, plenty of room if the truck driver had heeded the precautionary signs to move out of the fast lane.
