According to KOLO 8 News Now, a new Nevada law allows for motorcyclists to ride through red-lighted intersections. The impetus for the law came from the realization that many of the automobile recognition systems which govern the changing of stop lights fail to recognize motorcycles and bicycles. According to a Nevada motorcyclist, this causes safety concerns for novice riders unsure about how to proceed past an unrecognizing red light. Confused, “they end up making a right hand turn across two or three lanes because they don’t know what to do,” the motorcyclist said.
The law reads, “after complying with the requirement to stop, a person driving a motorcycle…may proceed straight through or turn right or left if the person waits for two complete cycles of the lights.” Of course, motorcyclists must still yield to pedestrians and automobiles moving with the normal cycle of lights.
The law raises some obvious safety concerns, because it is difficult to record exactly how many light-cycles a motorcyclist has passed through. Also, in regions with winding roads, the perpendicular road may be blind to oncoming traffic. As such, the motorcyclist may wait two full light cycles, and lawfully proceed through the red light as a driver rounds a blind turn, unaware of the motorcyclist’s presence, resulting in an accident.
