New research published in the journal Radiology suggests that women might take a longer time to recover from the effects of traumatic brain injuries, specifically concussions. According to the research, women have longer lasting memory impairment problems after receiving a concussion.
During the course of the study, researchers used 30 patients who had recently received concussions and gave them memory tests and MRI scans. Researchers then did the exact same thing with another group of men and women who had not received concussions.
One month later, the tests were conducted again on concussed patients, and then one last time six weeks later. Both groups had an equal number of men and women to help researchers balance the results of the study.
MRI tests allowed researchers to see which areas of the brain were being activated during the recovery process. By comparing the memory tests and MRI scan results, researchers were able to find a difference in how the brain healed between the two genders.
Do Men Heal From Concussions Faster than Women?
So what would cause the difference in recovery time from a concussion? According to the researchers, it has to do with structural differences in the brain between men and women.
When the brain sustains a concussion, its ability to communicate becomes dysfunctional. The process of this dysfunction and the time it takes to repair appears to be different in women. Concussions can cause long-lasting cognitive and emotional problems for a select few. Unfortunately, some individuals might suffer from the effects for years.
