One of the most difficult prospects of surviving a motorcycle accident can be enduring the long and grueling rehabilitation process while healing from a catastrophic injury. New techniques for rehabilitation and innovative devices are developed every year to help give individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) more independence in their daily lives.
After a motorcycle accident more than three decades ago left him paralyzed, veteran John Christensen can stand and cook on his own thanks to a new wheelchair that allows him to stand up with vertical support. The prototype wheelchair utilizes extra back wheels that allow individuals with an SCI to use a push rim that can stand them up into place. Thanks to this prototype wheelchair, John can do daily activities that would have been impossible before.
How Does This New Wheelchair Help SCI Rehabilitation?
We have mentioned on our blog before that two major areas of focus during the rehabilitation process from an SCI are maximizing independence and reducing secondary complications. The new wheelchair has allowed John to do things that would have been much more difficult before, or perhaps impossible on his own.
Dr. Gary Goldish, who is the director of an extended care and rehabilitation center for individuals with SCIs and inventor of the prototype wheelchair, has said that wheelchairs allowing patients to stand upright can reduce the risk of pressure sores from prolonged sitting.
By allowing more mobility, this wheelchair can help an individual with an SCI accomplish more independence with the added benefit of reducing further complications.
