New Video Sheds New Light on Jay Leno’s Near Motorcycle Accident

During 2011’s “Love Ride,” a charity motorcycle ride in Southern California, talk show host Jay Leno narrowly avoided a motorcycle accident. A new video recently surfaced on TMZ.com shows how the accident happened.

In the video, a white motorcycle riding next to Leno brakes suddenly, and a bike crashes into it from behind. Both parties of that accident survived, but a bike accident on the same section of the road later killed two people. Romarino Zeri and his girlfriend Julie Cameron died when their motorcycle crashed into a large truck. Zeri’s son Aaron said that the video might contain clues about the fatal accident that killed his father. Investigators now wonder if the two accidents are connected.

Leno received harsh criticism for a tasteless joke he made moments before the race began, saying that he wanted to see a crash.

“Every year, [the organizer] says ‘Drive safe.’ I’m going to say, ‘Don’t drive safe,’” Leno told the crowd before the race began. “I want to see somebody go down.”

Motorcycle accidents are not laughing matters. In 2007, the fatality rate for motorcycle accidents was seven times higher than that of motor vehicle passengers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
