Omaha Law Enforcement Urging Motorcycle Safety

Two recent crashes have made 2011 the deadliest year of motorcycle accidents in Nebraska since 1987, and Omaha-area law enforcement agencies are urging motorcyclists and drivers to take precautions to prevent any further deaths.

In one Tuesday this month, there were two serious motorcycle accidents. The first involved a Columbus man, who ran his bike into a van near 108th and Bennington Road, critically injuring himself. The second crash took a rider’s life after he hit a grain truck near Highway 36 north of Valley.

With the latest deadly crash, the number of deaths has risen to 22, the highest since 1987, when 31 riders were killed. The Nebraska State Patrol said that September was the deadliest month out of the year, with seven cyclists killed.

With near record-breaking fatalities, it is no wonder the authorities are stressing safety to area riders. A crash on a motorcycle is so much more dangerous than in an automobile and the potential for death or life-altering injury significantly higher.
