One Killed, Elderly Driver Charged in Denver Scooter Accident

On August 31, an elderly motorist caused an accident that killed a scooter driver, according to the Denver Post. Three vehicles were involved in the accident, but it all started with the elderly driver, a 91-year-old woman, failing to stop at a red light. The elderly woman has been charged with careless driving resulting in death because of the accident.

The accident happened at around 2:45 p.m. The elderly driver was traveling northbound in her Hyundai Sonata through the 700 block of North Quebec Street when she crashed into a Kia Sorrento stopped at the red light at the intersection of North Quebec Street and East 8th Avenue. The force of the collision then caused the Sorrento to hit a scooter that was stopped in front of it at the red light.

The force of the initial crash was so great that it, in fact, caused the Sorrento to not only hit the scooter but to run over it and its driver, a 53-year-old woman. The scooter driver did not die on the scene. She was taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead, according to a police report obtained by the Post. The other two drivers were not reported to have sustained any injuries in the accident.

This scooter driver was in no way at fault for this accident, yet she was not only the only one involved who was injured, but also her injuries proved fatal. Negligence took her life and nothing can change that. Still, the driver responsible must be held accountable, if for no other reason than to prevent a repeat of the offense and to provide the victim’s family with the compensation they need to deal with the financial burden of losing their loved one.
