A North Carolina woman who suffered a spinal cord injury has benefited from community support and a new device that can help reverse paralysis. At 22 years old, the young woman was involved in an accident while riding on the backseat of a motorcycle. Paralyzed from the chest down, she became the second person in the world to be outfitted with a device that allows movement.
The Neuro-Spinal Scaffold, created by InVivo Therapeutics, is a spinal scaffolding device that encourages the growth of new nerve cells. Co-invented by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor, the device could benefit thousands of patients during rehabilitation from spinal cord injuries, improving their recovery times and outcomes.
The young woman’s recovery had become a social media sensation. People offered support, donations and words of encouragement. After numerous posts to a GoFundMe page while still in the hospital, strangers raised $40,000 to help cover her medical bills. This GoFundMe page eventually became an outlet for the young woman to update supporters on the success of the spinal scaffolding device. Several videos were uploaded showing the woman moving her leg and hips.
