After six children suffered fatal injuries from tip-over accidents involving IKEA’s MALM dressers, the multibillion dollar furniture company has issued a recall. Three of the deaths, which involved children around 2 years old, occurred within the last several years. Parents should pay close attention to the IKEA recall because of the threat dangerous furniture can pose to small children.
Tip-over accidents are exactly what the name implies; incidents where large pieces of furniture fall onto unsuspecting people. Some accidents happened when small children attempted to climb IKEA’s MALM dressers. The recall involves 29 million dressers, which can fall over if not securely attached to the wall.
After two deaths in 2014, IKEA began to sell its MALM dressers with wall-mounting kits to prevent tip-over accidents. Unfortunately, these kits were unable to prevent additional deaths and injuries. Earlier this year, a third child died from a tip-over accident. Another 36 tip-over accidents involving IKEA’s MALM dressers have resulted in injuries to children.
Fortunately, there are ways that parents can stay updated on product recalls so these types of accidents can be avoided.
Using the CPSC to Check for Product Recalls
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regularly updates its websites with information on recalled products, including toys and furniture. If we go to the recent recalls section of the CPSC’s website, detailed information on IKEA’s MALM dressers is displayed.
For people who would rather receive smart phone updates, there are also many apps that list recent product recalls. The apps will send users recall information that can be categorized (for example, if you only want recall information on furniture or kitchen appliances). By staying informed on recalls, parents can help keep their children safe from dangerous products.
The Colorado personal injury attorneys at Metier Law Firm can help families who have been injured by dangerous products hold negligent businesses accountable.
