A Colorado motorcycle police officer crashed his bike during a high speed chase following a bank robbery.

A Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputy was following William Jennings, 48, a suspect in multiple bank robberies in Colorado. Police received a call about a bank robbery on the corner of Colfax and Wadsworth in Lakewood. Officers from multiple districts, including Colorado State Patrol and Lakewood County, followed the suspect in a chase that lasted for half an hour and reached speeds of 80 mph.

Officers finally apprehended the suspect in a residential area by “pitting” him in a driveway. Resident Brad Evers said he looked outside after he heard squealing tires and loud sirens.

“All of a sudden this car is up in our driveway,” Evers said.

Evers said that the timing of the accident was fortunate, since most of the neighborhood’s 22 children were in school that morning. He said that kids often play outside, in the street and in his driveway.

A vehicle unrelated to the robbery struck the officer’s motorcycle during the chase. Authorities say he should recover from his injuries.
