It was a fatal motorcycle accident, like so many that occur on roadways across the country. This accident happened on August 4, 2011 in Horry County, South Carolina at the intersection of Highway 17 Bypass and Glenns Bay Road.
Seventy-two year-old Jerry Smith was travelling south on Highway 17 Bypass when he turned left onto Glenns Bay road and was hit by an SUV travelling north.
It’s not so much the accident that is interesting, but the comments on the newspaper’s website.
The article never indicates who is at fault for the accident. We don’t know if Smith jumped in front of the SUV or if the SUV ran a stop sign. As a matter of fact, the police are still investigating the accident and no one has been charged with anything – yet.
Reading the comments, you would never know that. An individual who calls himself 101 begins his rant with “If drivers do not have adequate vision then they should no longer be allowed to drive.” He then goes on to talk about elderly drivers, cell phone usage and testing people for reaction times. He, by the way, is an excellent driver.
As I said, we don’t know who is at fault. We don’t know if Jerry Smith had bad vision or poor reaction times. We also don’t know the identity or age of the SUV driver, or what he/she was doing just before the crash.
The only thing we know for sure is that a motorcycle and an SUV collided, and one person is dead.
