Dhillion Massey, an 18-year-old Oklahoma man, died after a motorcycle accident on the campus of Oklahoma State University last week when he hit a speed bump at high speed and lost control. Massey was not a student or an employee at the OSU, according to the university newspaper.
A mechanical engineering student named McClain Robinson witnessed the accident. “I was at the intersection of University and Monroe driving to campus, and a guy on a motorcycle going probably about 80 (mph) just went flying by me,” McClain said. “He hit that first speed bump and tried to recover, but didn’t quite make it. He went flying off and hit a big vase.”
Early reports indicated that Massey was being pursued by police, but OSU police said that was not true.
It is tragic that this young man lost his life in an accident so easily avoided, and it points to the need for awareness among all riders to ride more defensively. It is unlikely that Massey was aware of the upcoming speedbump, otherwise he would not have been going 80 mph. It is the things we are unaware of that can cause injuries and fatalities while riding.
