In the last several weeks, we have written about stories involving the use of technology to help individuals with spinal cord injuries overcome limitations. Fortunately, many advances in both technology and medicine could allow accident survivors with paralysis to walk again.
After surviving a motorcycle accident in Chicago, an Army veteran was allowed to walk again with the help of advanced technology. In 2012, a motorcycle accident paralyzed the former military aviator from the chest down. During his stay at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, he became dedicated to walking again.
After months of standard rehabilitation, such as transferring from a wheelchair to a bed, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago outfitted the veteran with a $70,000 robotic exoskeleton suit and taught him how to use it. The ReWalk device uses powered hip and knee joints to allow accident survivors with paralysis to stand upright and walk.
After putting on the exoskeleton, batteries can sustain the device for up to four hours.
Should I Contact an Attorney If I Have Been Injured In a Motorcycle Accident?
Motorcycle accidents are a primary cause of spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries. Rehabilitation can cost millions of dollars in medical bills and lost income over the course of his or her lifetime. Contacting an attorney may provide an accident survivor with the opportunity for covering these costs.
