Hard winds, excessive speed, and a top-heavy load were contributing factors to a semi-trailer toppling over and spilling part of its cargo in Casper, Wyoming on May 30. The truck was carrying nearly 4,000 gallons of CL-23 Crosslinker; a clear, colorless fluid used in hydraulic fracturing. Authorities said three of the twelve tanks were punctured and leaked out 160 gallons of the fluid. No one, not even the driver was hurt in the accident.
The accident happened around 9:45 a.m. and was not fully cleaned up and the road was not completely opened until 4 p.m. There was a light to mild inhalation hazard but the fluid did not appear to be flammable. Authorities had established, due to the shifting load and high speed, the accident would have happened without the wind.
The truck driver is very lucky he was not hurt and did not hurt anyone else. In an attempt to save money, trucking companies will often times load their trucks past their recommended limit. Subsequently putting other people’s lives in danger.
