Stay Aware on Your Motorcycle

While it is important to be visible while riding, it is equally important as a motorcyclist to be aware of everything around you. You must be consistently alert in order to protect yourself from unexpected obstacles and unaware motorists. The physical risks of a motorcycle accident are so high that inattentiveness on the road is simply not an option.

You need to keep your eyes moving while you are riding. Becoming too fixated on any one scene can be disastrous for a rider. Whether the object of your attention is a car crash or a beautiful lake, staring too long could cause you to miss a situation that could hurt you.

Keep your eyes moving, constantly alert. Look ahead of you and behind you and glance at your mirrors frequently. Before you change your position on the road, check again. Staying aware will allow you to anticipate difficulties and respond appropriately.

Keep a safe distance between you and the driver in front of you. When traveling under 40 mph, a two-second gap is appropriate. When you are traveling at higher speeds on the open road, you should expand that gap to three or four seconds. As an example, when the vehicle in front of you passes a telephone pole, begin counting, “one-one-thousand, two-one-thousand.” You should pass the pole at “two-one-thousand” if you are looking for a two-second gap.

Make constant awareness an automatic state for you as a rider. Failing to do so could be deadly.
