On July 20, a 15-year-old jogger was the victim of a hit-and-run when a street racer ran a red light and struck him in a crosswalk, according to ABC 7 News in Denver. The accident occurred at the intersection of South Kipling Parkway and West Asbury Avenue in Lakewood, Colorado.

The 15-year-old was out for a jog as a part of his military academy training. As he was taking a crosswalk through the intersection, a Chrysler PT Cruiser, involved in a street race, blew through the red light and hit him. The jogger was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the PT Cruiser did not stop, but instead fled the scene.

Several days later, a tip from a family member of the suspect led to the impoundment a PT Cruiser that matched the description of the one from the accident. After investigators matched the damage to and DNA evidence from the impounded PT Cruiser to the crime scene damage and DNA evidence, a 21-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular homicide, tampering with evidence, engaging in a speed contest and false reporting to authorities. The driver of a dark blue Volkswagen Jetta that may have also been involved in the crash has still not been located.

The 15-year-old was attending the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas, but was spending the summer break at home with his family in Lakewood. He wanted to be a Navy SEAL and was on his way to “becoming a man,” according to his father.

This father will never get to see his son grow into the man he saw him becoming. Nothing can change that fact. Still, those responsible need to be held accountable for the results of their negligence—both to help deter future tragedies and recover the compensation the family needs to move on with their lives.
