The Sturgis motorcycle rally, which recently ended in Sturgis, South Dakota, is a time for revelry and camaraderie among the many thousands of bike riders who attend the rally. However, the South Dakota Highway Patrol reports that last year’s rally resulted in nine motorcycle fatalities, according to Rapid City Journal. Motorcycle injuries and accidents will ruin any summertime celebration, so South Dakota police and the South Dakota Motorcycle Safety Program urge riders to take a few safety precautions when enjoying the end of their summers on the road.
Capt. Kevin Karley states that motorcyclists must make sure all parts of their bikes are in good condition, since several crashes resulted from tread problems in the tires or faulty tires. The coordinator for the South Dakota Motorcycle Safety Program, Ted Erlewine, indicates that bikers should have a strategy for driving, and they should remain alert and focused at all times. In addition, bikers should know their limits, and try not to drive when fatigued. Karley reiterates that motorcycles and alcohol do not mix, and emotions, such as road rage, have a negative impact on the safety of motorcycle riding. Wildlife can also affect a biker’s safety, especially when riding in rural areas, such as South Dakota.
Although we cannot control how other drivers operate on the road, these safety precautions will ensure that we do our part to prevent summertime motorcycle injuries.
