The holiday season is usually filled with all sorts of revelry, so it is no surprise that law enforcement agencies beef up their efforts to discourage drunk driving. Nebraska law enforcement agencies, thanks to federal grants, are stepping up their patrols, running DUI checkpoints and working overtime.
Legislation was passed this year by Nebraska’s Unicameral that will increase jail time and fine potential on drunk drivers. The laws do not take effect until after the first of the year, but when they do, DUI offenses will remain on a person’s record for 15 instead of 12 years.
Drinking and driving can be especially troublesome for motorcyclists, and the behavior has even greater potential for causing a motorcycle accident. Motorcycles take more coordination to operate than automobiles, making impairment an even greater risk.
Fortunately, for residents of Douglas and Sarpy counties, the “Safe Ride Home” program will once again be available over the holiday season. From the hours of 8 p.m. through 3 a.m., free cab rides will be available for those who need them. Regardless of whether you drove or rode, you have a safe option for getting home.
Holiday parties are a common fixture of the season, and it is important for employers to be aware of the dangers to be avoided when throwing a company party. The law firm of Kesluk & Silverstein discussed this issue last week. With the “Safe Ride Home” program, companies will have an option to keep their employees safe while providing festivities.
