Last Tuesday, a new law went into effect in Texas that will remove any confusion about what types of lights riders are allowed to use at night. For many riders at night, headlights and taillights are the only tools keeping them from being involved in motorcycle accidents. However, headlights and taillights are not a guarantee of safety, especially while riding alongside other vehicles.
The new law will allow riders to place non-flashing white and amber LEDs under tanks or on the side of motorcycles. These are usually referred to as “underglow lights”. This new law would allow greater visibility while riding at night, and could reduce the number of motorcycle accidents on Texas roads and highways. An Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study from 2013 found that 25 percent of motorcycle accidents occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Interestingly enough, the state legislators who advocated for the new law are riders themselves.
How Would Colorado Benefit From a Similar Law?
Colorado could possibly benefit from having a similar law. Riders can be struck while attempting to pass other vehicles. Having side or underglow LED lights could add an extra layer of visibility. For now, it is advisable for riders to place reflective tape around the side of their motorcycles in addition to wearing bright clothing.
It takes extra caution to ride during night, especially on roads where lighting is poor. The right equipment, skills and experience can go a long way in preventing motorcycle accidents.
