Savannah Nash’s first outing with her new license turned into a fatal vehicle accident. On May 17, in Harrisonville, Montana, 16-year-old Nash received permission to drive solo to the grocery store. On her way to the store, she attempted to make a left-hand turn across traffic when she was hit on the driver side by a tractor trailer which was unable to brake in time. Investigators said they found an unsent text message on Nash’s phone, which they believe to be the cause of the accident. Nash was pronounced dead at the scene.
This Memorial Day, parents and teens should keep in mind the large number of motorists that will be out on the road to enjoy the holiday. Increased traffic means an increased chance for an accident. You can play an active role in trying to decrease those chances by not using a cell phone. A study conducted by Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, found that drivers who used hand-held devices are four times more likely to be involved in a crash that causes serious injury.
