Police escorts are a common sight on roadways in many states, whether they are escorting funerals, dignitaries, and wide-cargo loads or controlling traffic outside sporting events. Motorcycle police on escort duty have a dangerous job, one that can turn deadly if motorists are not paying attention.
The Houston Chronicle did an accident analysis for the past five years, and found that at least one officer was killed and several others were injured as off-duty escorts in motorcycle accidents.
On December 12, Sgt. Matt Novotny, 52, was working an off-duty job escorting a funeral when he was hit by a female driver who apparently failed to see his flashing lights or hear his siren. Now he is recovering from a broken pelvis and other severe injuries.
In January 2008 an accident resulted in the death of Harris County Precinct 7 Deputy Constable David Joubert, 60. He was on his way to escort a funeral when a car pulled in front of him.
The city of Houston requires that all funeral processions be escorted by at least one police motorcycle, with at least two for a procession of more than 10 vehicles.
Some question the need for the arrangement. Would it not be safer for everyone if funeral guests met the hearse and the family at the church or cemetery?
