Three Ways to Avoid Motorcycle Invisibility

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycles are 37 times more likely to get into a crash per mile than a car is. One of the major reasons is that other motorists have a hard time seeing motorcyclists on the road, especially at night or in stormy weather. Here are a few ways to make sure other drivers see you and your motorcycle.

1. Bright colors

No need to break out the bright green jumpsuit, but traces of a bright color, either on you or your bike, can help you avoid motorcycle accidents. Most bikers wear dark clothing and don’t do much in the way of flashy decals, so they tend to blend in at night. Try a colored bandana, helmet, or jacket with a reflective design.

2. Bright lights

Failing to change a dim lightbulb could be the last mistake you ever make. HID lights are some of the brightest you’ll find. LED lights are also fantastic, and their longevity is both cost effective and eco-friendly. It is pricier, though. Make sure you angle your light correctly, according to your state’s regulations.

3. Stay alert

Keep an eye on your surroundings. Cars that swerve, change lanes without signaling, or generally drive without considering their fellow travelers probably won’t notice you. Keep your distance and stay out of blind spots.

You could also add runners, reflective tape, or bright decals to your bike, but if you don’t want to damage your street cred, you can still stay noticed on the road using the above methods.
