One of the best ways for car drivers to prevent motorcycle accidents is to look carefully, especially at intersections, for motorcycles. Allstate Insurance hopes to make drivers think about this motorcycle safety tip in 25 different cities around North Carolina for a week in September. According to WCNC.com, one of the most dangerous intersections in Matthews, NC, outside of Charlotte, is where East John Street meets South Trade Street, so the insurance company is placing newly designed traffic signs at this intersection. In Mecklenburg County, which includes Matthews, authorities documented 236 motorcycle crashes with 138 at intersections in 2009.
Allstate Insurance teamed up with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to create and place yellow diamond shaped traffic signs that include the word “look” and show a silhouette of a motorcycle and a rider. This sign is part of Allstate’s campaign called “Once is never enough,” hoping to make drivers look a few times at an intersection to make sure a motorcycle is not coming.
Though the signs will not be a permanent installation at the intersections, we hope that the actions of the state and the insurance company will help in the short term to remind drivers to be aware of all people on the road.
