Trial Begins: Will A Colorado Springs Motorcycle Cop Find Justice?

On March 13th, a Colorado Springs Police motorcycle officer saw a Jeep driving 49 mph in a 35 zone. The officer immediately responded by pulling the vehicle over, but he didn’t’ have time to write the speeding ticket. The Jeep shifted into reverse and slammed into the unsuspecting officer. Now the trial of the man driving that Jeep has started, but will the officer find justice for the injuries he suffered?

Police later cornered the 46-year-old driver at a condominium complex and took him into custody. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer, and 16 other charges, but his defense lawyers say that the charges are too steep.

“Yes, he made a mistake. It was an impulsive, stupid decision.” The defense attorney said that “his intention was to knock over the bike.”

However, a witness who was in the Jeep during the incident said that he heard the 46-year-old say that he was going to ram the motorcycle officer right before he shifted into reverse. This casts a shadow of doubt upon the driver’s intentions, and could influence the direction of this trial.

What Happened To The Motorcycle Cop?

The officer who was injured suffered non-life threatening injuries in the attack, but was later diagnosed with serious bodily injury. He has since returned to full duty status. Luckily there are measures in place to help support officers who are injured in the line of duty, but normal everyday motorcycle riders don’t have these benefits.

That’s why it’s important that everyone take extra care when driving around motorcyclists. Bikes have no structures to protect riders from a crash or accident, which means the smallest incident could risk a rider’s life.
