Colorado State Patrol troopers suspect that excessive speeds as well as alcohol may have contributed to the fatal motorcycle accident that occurred on March 25. Witnesses reported that two motorcycles were traveling at high rates of speed on Interstate 70 when one rider lost control, slamming into a retaining wall near the off-ramp. The 52-year-old man was taken to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries. The Clifton exit off I-70 was closed for a few hours after 5:00 p.m. while police investigated the scene.
A Bad Mix for Motorcyclists: Speeding and Alcohol Use
Approximately half of all accidents that involve a single motorcyclist are later found to be caused by speeding or alcohol use. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says motorcyclists are one of three groups most at risk of being involved in an alcohol-related driving accident. In its most recent study about motorcycle safety, the agency found:
- 28 percent of motorcyclists killed in fatal crashes had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent or greater
- Roughly half of the motorcyclists with BACs of 0.08 percent or greater were over the age of 40
Speeding and alcohol use also greatly affects other vehicle accidents as well. However, the lack of protection offered by motorcycles makes these types of accidents much more likely to result in fatalities and other serious injuries to the rider.
