Veterans Flock to Cripple Creek to Honor Fallen Soldiers

Hundreds of motorcyclists and veterans attended the 27th Annual POW/MIA Recognition Ride on August 16. The ride was part of a larger Salute to Veterans rally hosted in Cripple Creek, Colorado.

At 10:15 a.m., crowds of motorcycle enthusiasts and supporters lined the streets of Woodland Park to see the riders off. They did a mass ride through Woodland Park’s main drag and business district before hitting Highway 24.

Colorado’s largest procession of motorcycles rode up Ute Pass to the Colorado Continental Divide, before turning south to Cripple Creek. The riders finally met up with the Salute to Veterans rally in the shadow of Pikes Peak.

Both rallies offered remembrance ceremonies to honor veterans. The 27th Annual POW/MIA Recognition Ride’s ceremony was hosted at Cripple Creek’s City Park. A separate ceremony was held at the Cripple Creek War Memorial, honoring ten local soldiers who died this past year by adding their names to the monument.

Veterans and motorcyclists share a special bond, due to a love of excitement and a strong belief in freedom. Service members often purchase motorcycles when they return home, and many motorcyclists are former veterans.
