Sean O’Connell, a 16-year veteran of the Washington State Patrol, died on May 31after he was thrown from his motorcycle while on patrol. The motorcycle officer, who was once named Trooper of the Year, hit a box truck head on driven by a 49-year-old Mt. Vernon man. Currently, an investigation into the accident is ongoing. Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The accident occurred on the same stretch of road as the Skagit River Bridge collapse. There have been increased patrols in the area due to the high level of traffic because of the collapse. A motorcade memorial of 150 police cruises took place, as O’Connell’s body was transported from Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon to a funeral home. O’Connell is survived by his wife and two children.
This is a profoundly tragic loss for the O’Connell family and the state of Washington. These kinds of accidents show that even with the proper safety gear, you can still sustain serious injury during a motorcycle crash.
