Spring has started and summer is just around the corner, which means warmer weather and potential health risks to people exposed to the outdoors. If safety precautions are not followed, vulnerable motorcyclists could succumb to the effects of very warm weather.
Fortunately, there are precautions motorcyclists can take to avoid dehydration, heat stroke and other health issues.
- Hydration is important for staving off heat-related illnesses. Avoiding caffeine and sugary drinks can help riders stay hydrated. Heat exhaustion can occur when the body loses large amounts of water, and it can lead to extreme drowsiness and fainting.
- Much like in colder weather, clothing is an important factor for improving rider safety. It is important to stay covered to avoid excessive sun exposure, which can evaporate water and cause heat-related illnesses. Lightweight clothing can offer comfort and protection from the heat.
- Some riders are more at risk than others are, such as the elderly, the obese and individuals taking certain medications. According to the Centers for Disease Control, individuals over the age of 65 are more likely to have difficulty adjusting to sudden changes in temperature.
Some safety tips may seem like common sense, but as an official with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration mentioned during a large surge of motorcycle accidents in 2013, “the most notable thing was the warm weather”.
