What Can We Learn About Motorcycle Safety From Fighter Jet Pilots?

For the last two weeks, we have given our readers an inside look at how the military treats motorcycle safety. Motorcycle safety tips can come from many different organizations and people, but hearing it from the men and women who fly fighter jets for the U.S. Air Force (USAF) could be beneficial to our readers.

The USAF is taking part in Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month throughout May. According to the USAF, about 10 percent of its aviators ride motorcycles. Unfortunately, statistics also show that motorcycle accidents are a primary cause of death among members of the USAF. In 2013, there were 248 motorcycle accidents involving USAF members, and 19 were fatal.

To help keep motorcyclists safe, the USAF has advice for regular motorists to help them ‘share the road’:

  • Distracted driving is a primary cause of car accidents, but it can also put motorcyclists at risk. The USAF Academy Safety Office reminds motorists that motorcyclists can be very difficult to see, and distracted driving can rob motorists of the attention needed to spot them.
  • Be attentive when changing lanes and always check blind spots. Drivers should always prepare to encounter motorcyclists.
  • When encountering a motorcycle, take some time to assess its speed so you do not get too close. Motorcycles need plenty of room to maneuver and avoid potential obstacles.

Where Can I Learn More About Motorcycle Safety?

In the military, motorcycle safety courses are mandatory for riders. However, as we will discuss throughout motorcycle safety month, keeping motorcyclists safe on the road is a joint effort.
