What Can We Learn From Tracy Morgan About Traumatic Brain Injuries?

Tracy Morgan, the famous comedian involved in a truck accident last summer, recently gave an interview to NBC’s Matt Lauer about recovering from a traumatic brain injury. Morgan has made few appearances in the last year, instead focusing on his recovery.

Last June, Morgan and comedian James McNair were leaving a parking lot when a fatigued Walmart truck driver slammed into their vehicle. Morgan was transported to a local hospital, where he awoke from a coma to learn that he had suffered a traumatic brain injury and his friend James McNair had died in the accident.

Morgan mentioned to Lauer that losing his friend and has been the most difficult aspect of recovering from his accident. However, he suspects the effects of the traumatic brain injury have intensified the emotional struggle of coming to terms with the death of his friend.

Despite everything he has been through, Morgan remains optimistic about his recovery and has considered perhaps one day returning to making people laugh as a professional comedian.

What Are The Long-Term Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injuries?

Traumatic brain injuries can cause long-lasting emotional and behavioral problems for accident survivors, and some may never return to their old selves. Depending on where a brain injury occurs, symptoms can include verbal outbursts, impulsive behavior, apathy and depression.

In Morgan’s case, he recalled awakening from his coma in a state of anger and confusion, but eventually got better with time during his rehabilitation. In some cases, accident survivors can make tremendous strides in their recovery.
