With self-driving cars and trucks taking to the road, some of our readers might also wonder about what motorcycles of the near future will look like. Concepts detailing the future of motorcycles are on the drawing board, and include some ideas that many motorcyclists have never encountered.
One of the strangest concepts we came seen is the Lane Splitter. As a car-motorcycle hybrid, the Lane Splitter can be used as a two seat, four-wheeled car, or it can separate down the middle and become two motorcycles. While technically a two-wheeled motorcycle, the Lane Splitter has a normal car seat, windshield and steering wheel.
Although it might seem like fun to own a motorcycle-car hybrid, the Lane Splitter is not expected to be released for mass production.
Other concepts have more in common with what is currently on the market. Electric motorcycles are not only very fast, some are completely silent. Many moviegoers probably saw a familiar motorcycle much like this in the new Avengers movie.
Can Future Motorcycles Improve Motorcycle Safety?
The most futuristic concept might be the “driverless motorcycle” currently being tested by one of the largest software developers in the world. According to the company, the driverless motorcycles could be used to deliver packages or pick up passengers. However, this example has moved away from concept art, and a prototype has been developed.
It is possible that future development of driverless vehicles will allow for collision warning systems on motorcycles, or ways for motorcycles to communicate with other vehicles.
As interesting as these three concepts are, it will be interesting to witness how future developments in motorcycles will contribute to motorcycle safety.
