Why CDOT’s Live to Ride Campaign Can Save Your Life

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) created the Live to Ride campaign to help educate both riders and motorists on how to avoid motorcycle accidents. CDOT has launched several public safety ads for riders and motorists that offer tips for avoiding collisions.

  • CDOT recently used a series of popular 80s songs to emphasize that motorists should “look twice” for riders. Advertising tactics are not only promoted on the radio, but also on billboards, buses, gas stations and banners across the state.
  • The Live to Ride campaign suggests riders should receive training. According to CDOT, lack of training is a factor in 7 out of 10 fatal motorcycle accidents in Colorado. Training classes teach new and advanced riders skills that can prevent accidents. The Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) program helps riders receive low-cost and advanced training to prepare for many hazardous situations commonly found in Colorado.
  • Gear such as eye protection can protect riders from bugs, debris and other potential hazards. For example, imagine riding through a dusty construction zone without eye protection at 40 mph. It would be almost impossible to see anything. Clothing is also important and can protect riders from poor weather and other hazards. CDOT also suggests using bright colors to become more visible to other motorists.

Statewide safety programs serve as an important source of education for both riders and motorists. As CDOT continues to promote motorcycle safety initiatives, we will continue to update our readers on how to stay safe.
