The motor vehicle industry is changing to become safer and more automated, with cars and trucks being developed to add computer-controlled safety features. Some motorcycle manufacturers appear to be moving forward with this trend, although hopefully not too much, as a self-driving motorcycle would take the fun out of the hobby.
However, manufacturers like Honda are developing concepts that feel like they belong more on a fighter jet than a motorcycle, such as radar systems that can sense oncoming collisions and slow the bike down. Onboard GPS will keep a rider from getting lost and will connect through Wi-Fi and 3G networks.
Honda’s 2015 CB750 has plenty of onboard computers and is powered by a four-cylinder liquid hydrogen engine. Automation and safety appear to be a theme with the CB750, as computers control the suspension, tuning, GPS, collision detection and airbags. The user can disable many of these settings, but it points to an interesting development in motorcycle trends.
Many motorcycle accidents are caused by human error. Having a highly advanced computer help keep people away from danger may be beneficial. As we wrote about in earlier posts, most accidents take place in intersections and inattentive drivers often hit riders. No one will deny that part of the freedom of riding a motorcycle is doing it yourself, so while this market will appeal to some, it likely will not to others.
