Will Installing Driver Cameras Help Prevent Truck Accidents?

One of the largest commercial carriers in the country has recently begun equipping trucks with cameras capable of monitoring drivers. Swift Transportation is one of several commercial carriers to install driver cameras in an attempt to thwart truck accidents.

It is believed that by installing driver-facing cameras, truck drivers will be less likely to engage in negligent driving practices. Human beings are less likely to engage in unacceptable behaviors when we believe we are being watched. In a study by Newcastle University, researchers found evidence that hanging posters of “observant eyes” reduced bad behavior in bystanders by as much as 50 percent. So can cameras be even more successful at stopping negligent truck drivers?

In the case of Swift Transportation, the company plans to archive footage of drivers instead of monitoring a live feed. Specifically, the video would only record footage in the event of a hard swerve or other unusual event

Have Cameras Had Success In Preventing Truck Accidents?

Other commercial carriers that utilize cameras have noticed a decrease in truck accidents. Bozzuto, a major food distributor, saw a 22 percent drop in truck accidents during the first two years of installing cameras.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently released a report showing the benefits of installing onboard video systems for truck drivers. According to the NTSB, information from video footage could help investigators determine the causes of truck accidents.

City and school buses use video cameras capable of recording accidents, which allows NTSB investigators to use information collected in video footage and make recommendations to avoid future crashes.
