New legislation has been passed by the Wyoming House of Representatives to help reduce the number of bicycle accidents in the state. Legislators are introducing a three-foot rule that will require motorists to leave three feet of space when passing a cyclist.
Cycling has grown in popularity across the nation, not just as a leisure activity, but also as a means of commuting to work. There are no penalties if the rule is violated, but the law will serve to let motorists know they have an obligation to provide a specific amount of space for cyclists.
Opponents of the bill believe that a public information campaign for motorists would be more effective.
Are There Ways Cyclists Can Protect Themselves From Bicycle Accidents?
Bicycle safety is an important skill for any cyclist to have, as bicycle accidents can cause catastrophic injuries and death. Bicycle accidents are capable of causing traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries, both of which can cost a person extensive health care and rehabilitation costs. Currently, bicycle accidents account for one-fortieth of all road deaths, slightly more than 800 a year across the nation.
Cyclists can reduce their chances of an accident by wearing bright or reflective clothing, using bike lights, and cycling in greater numbers. Cycling accidents happen more frequently in poorly lit areas with inadequate infrastructure for cyclists.
