How Will Research Help Reduce Motorcycle Accidents?

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) are attempting to identify what habits lead to safe riding, motorcycle accidents and near-crashes.

To collect the data, MSF and VTTI researchers are using 363,000 miles of riding and a highly diverse sample of people. For example, the sample of motorcyclists used will include all age groups and all types of riders – people who commute, ride for pleasure and riders who sometimes wear safety gear and sometimes do not.

How Will This Study Work?

Motorcyclists will be asked about their training history, riding capabilities and riding style. By attempting to be as comprehensive as possible, researchers are hoping to identify how motorcycle accidents happen.

To collect the data, the study will video record motorcyclists and gather information on the near-crashes and accidents so researchers can observe what went wrong. Over 50 factors will be scored to determine the exact cause of an adverse event while riding. Data collected will be incorporated into training programs across the country in hopes of reducing motorcycle accidents.

MSF is a nationwide organization that helps conduct training and education on motorcycle safety and licensing. Motorcyclists can sign up for MSF classes by visiting MSF’s website.
