Woman Lucky to be Alive After Motorcycle Crash

A Colorado Springs woman survived a motorcycle crash with nothing more than a slight concussion.

Kriston Bettes, 46, was riding westbound on CR 11 at about 1:45 p.m. Sunday, May 30, 2011. Bettes, who was riding without a helmet, failed to make the turn five miles east of the intersection of CR 9 and CR11 when she was ejected from her motorcycle. Responders at the scene noted blood on Bettes’s face and called the Flight for Life helicopter.

Because she was ejected from her vehicle and was not wearing a helmet, State Trooper Mike Reinheimer said: “She was lucky. It was just a regular crash.” Head injuries are the leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes and an un-helmeted rider is 40 percent more likely to suffer a fatal head injury than a helmeted rider, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Bette was transported to Colorado Springs hospital where she was treated for her concussion and released. Colorado State Patrol reports that no drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.
