CNN has covered multiple accidents reported all around Vail, Colorado on March 4, as a result of blizzard-like weather conditions. Most notably, stretches of Interstate 70 near the Blue River Parkway exit in Silverthorne were temporarily shut down due to car accidents involving at least 25 vehicles. A couple miles east, 30 more vehicles were also involved in a pileup. Out of the wreckage, five people were immediately transported to local hospitals, including one driver with serious injuries. Other reports of accidents caused by the storm are still being released.

Being Prepared For Blizzard Conditions

We urge those that find themselves driving in snowy surroundings to always exercise caution. Living in a geographic area with the potential for this type of weather requires some preparation. It is useful to have a basic first-aid kit in your car, along with water, blankets and food. Some drivers choose to continue driving, at a reduced speed, while in a blizzard. • Start your car intermittently. This provides heat and also saves gas.

• Keep yourself moving. Stretching or clapping can help keep your blood flowing, and reduce chances of hypothermia.

• Leave a window slightly cracked. This ensures that you will not get carbon monoxide poisoning.

• If you are able to, check the exhaust pipe of your car to make sure it is free of snow. The clogging of an exhaust pipe can also lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
