Does Wyoming Have a Work Safety Problem?

Several weeks ago, we posted about a new law that was being proposed in the Wyoming House of Representatives that will add a $50,000 fine for businesses that have a worker die from unsafe working conditions.

As it turns out, Wyoming has a work accident problem, ranking among one of the most dangerous states to work in. This is not the first time Wyoming has attempted to fix the problem, and in 2012, the state devoted a lot of attention to increasing the intensity of inspections. In addition to inspections, Wyoming created new industry safety coalitions.

Wyoming has ranked consistently as the most dangerous state to work in. In 2010, Wyoming had an occupational death rate that was almost four times the national average. In recent years, Wyoming has had an oil and gas boom, an industry that has a history of safety violations and worker deaths. According to Occupational Safety and Health Administration numbers, in 2013, 34.6 percent of workplace deaths occurred in natural resources and mining.

Employees who survive accidents are likely to face serious injuries such as burns, spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries. Falls continue to rank among the most common type of work injury. Employers are legally obligated to provide a safe working environment for their employees. Injured employees and grieving families may have the option of consulting an attorney and filing a civil claim for damages.
