Concussions are not the only danger to high school athletes. Abdominal injuries can be even more dangerous and unexpected. To avoid concussions, football players are now going lower to tackle each other, leading to bruised kidneys and organs.
In an article published in USA Today, a family retold the tragic story of how their son died playing a sport he loved. The high school athlete was slammed into from the front and back while catching a pass. His mother recalls watching her son try to get up, but knowing something was wrong. He was wincing in pain and his skin had turned pale gray. Shortly after attempting to rejoin the game, he collapsed on the field.
After losing consciousness a second time on the way to the hospital, he never woke up again. Doctors determined the young athlete had died of a severe liver rupture. His parents are responsible for launching EvoShield, a company that provides abdominal protection for football players.
Abdominal Injuries Are a Hidden Risk for Football Players
Stories involving abdominal injuries and football are becoming more common. Another story in the USA Today article tells the story of a regional quarterback and high school football superstar who died during a game. Much like the young man mentioned in the first story, the star athlete collapsed and never woke up again. His fellow teammates remember seeing him take a hit to the abdomen earlier in the game. Doctors later determined he had suffered a ruptured spleen.
